Youth Rights
*It's time for a change!*
The Washington Youth Voting Rights Society, WAYVRS, is committed to fighting adultism and to the promotion of youth rights. Adultism is discriminating against people based solely on their age, similar to past actions of discrimination against African Americans and Women. Our primary goal is to lower the voting age so that youth have an equal say in how their country is run.
It is said that teenagers under the age of 18 are not smart, responsible, or involved enough to have those rights. Yet teenagers can live in a world that gets more polluted by the day, they are subject to laws that violate their constitutional rights, they are shown to volunteer more than adults, and they are made to attend schools without a say in their funding. These simple truths show that the reasons given to deny youth the right to vote are just excuses that allow the status quo of discrimination to prevail.
Discrimination against the youth is an everyday problem that is embedded in our way of living. From the laws that govern us, to the courts that uphold those laws. The fight for youth rights is everyone's problem and it's time that we stood up and upheld the founding pillar of our society, under which all people are equal.
